dead pixel devlog1
So, my original idea for this was to be a game that I could easily complete -- something that I could learn from and publish just to get over the "beginner game dev" hump.
But that didn't happen.
Over the course of like three hours, I came up with an idea, main character, and general form. And now, I'm putting it all together in this post as I do it in Godot.
But of course, what's the idea?
The idea is a game called Dead Pixel, a meta/puzzle/surreal 16x16 pixel platformer where during the Generic Game Intro, the main character notices a dead pixel -- and promptly points it out to you, the player.
The main character, whom I've named Jimbly, is a young but high-strung purple snail. He (and you) will find out what this mysterious dead pixel is and why its appearance has disrupted his life and everything around him.
Everyone meet Jimbly. Our main character. Wow.
Designwise, I'm no pixel artist, let alone a 16x16 pixel artist. So I went into Jimbly with the idea of him being a catman but the shape ended up looking like a snail. The colors were just in the default palette of Aseprite. I mean, this was just supposed to be for a prototype.
I made a two frame idle and walk animation.
ONTO THE GAME
Why didn't I also make a prototype ground or sky or literally anything else?
1. I'm high, and 2. I am following this series up until it stops being relevant to my game:
so he's focusing on character animation first and now I am too. Surrpise!
I set up my Godot project and linked it to my github and then it was time to start. I won't bore everyone with the coding and "following a tutorial to a T" details, so just suffice to say that I got too high and had to stop around 16:57 in the above video.
I think that'll be it for tonight. If I do anything more, then I will include it in the next devlog. Stay blazin.
Dead Pixel
A normal puzzle-platformer. But there's something wrong with your screen? You gonna do something about that?
